We worked our way through every taco at Super Taco, and choosing a favourite proved harder than ordering. The fish, cauliflower and skirt steak all made our shortlist – which, on a four-taco menu, probably tells you how much we enjoyed lunch.
Tucked into Crossley Street in Melbourne’s CBD, this small taqueria comes from Georgie Larkins, whose background spans hospitality marketing and venue development.
Time spent living in New York and travelling through Mexico helped shape the idea, while experimenting with corn tortillas at home brought it closer to reality. It’s also a personal venture for the mum of three, who wanted to create a business she could build around her family.
In the kitchen is José Angel Delgado Juárez, who previously ran a restaurant in Pachuca, Mexico, and worked at Melbourne’s Rockpool. Here, the menu centres on four tacos: al pastor, cauliflower, crispy fish and skirt steak, with corn tortillas pressed in-house.
For us, the appeal was in how much flavour each one delivered. The fish was a favourite, the cauliflower comfortably held its own alongside the meat options, and the steak was juicy, tasty and particularly memorable.
We tried the whole line-up, but those three would be straight back on our next order. Then there was the self-serve salsa bar, with salsa verde, salsa macha, salsa roja, red onion and coriander to finish your tacos just how you like them. We loved being able to mix and match, although the salsa salsa was a favourite.
It’s the sort of detail you find yourself talking about afterwards, along with which taco you’d go back for first. Some of the salsa recipes come from Juárez’s family, bringing another little piece of his Mexican home to this Melbourne shop.
The space is compact, with an open kitchen and limited seating, so keep that in mind if you’re bringing the family or hoping to settle in for a long lunch. But for a city food stop built around freshly made tortillas and a few very satisfying choices, Super Taco gave us plenty to come back for.
Our advice? Order a mix. Going in determined to choose just one favourite might be ambitious.
