SUPA BÁGÁ: Melbourne’s New Japanese Burger Bar Bringing Big Flavours to Southbank

A fresh take on burgers has landed in Southbank! We recently visited SUPA BÁGÁ with the kids for lunch, discovering bold Japanese flavours, delicious burgers, creative sides and some seriously good drinks. Here’s what we loved and why it’s worth checking out!

Melbourne certainly isn’t short of great burger joints, but every now and then, somewhere new comes along with a fresh take on an old favourite.

Meet SUPA BÁGÁ, a Japanese-inspired burger bar that officially opened its doors on 2 October 2026 at 30 Chessell Street, Southbank.

With its striking orange interiors, retro arcade-inspired branding, Japanese flavours and a menu packed with wagyu burgers, crispy katsu and creative drinks, SUPA BÁGÁ brings something a little different to Melbourne’s burger scene.

We recently stopped by for lunch with the kids to check it out, and it’s safe to say we found a few new family favourites!

Behind SUPA BÁGÁ are co-founders Ryo Northfield and Rich Wu, who have brought together their love of Japanese food, quality ingredients and playful design.

Northfield, the chef behind Melbourne’s Sara Craft Ramen & Bar, leads the kitchen and menu development, while Wu is responsible for the branding and overall customer experience.

Interestingly, Northfield previously worked as head chef for renowned Japanese chef Hiroyuki Sakai, best known for Iron Chef.

The concept was inspired by Northfield’s childhood dream of opening a takeaway burger shop and Wu’s experiences discovering Japanese burgers during his travels through Japan.

The result is a menu that combines familiar burger favourites with Japanese ingredients, house-made sauces and a few unexpected flavour combinations.

And the venue itself is just as interesting!

Think bold orange seating, stainless-steel finishes, neon lighting and nostalgic Japanese arcade-inspired details. It’s bright, modern and playful without losing that casual burger-bar atmosphere.

Naturally, visiting with the kids meant ordering a good selection from the menu, and we certainly didn’t hold back!

The Burgers

Signature Wagyu

A classic with a Japanese twist! Featuring a juicy wagyu beef patty, SUPA BÁGÁ’s original sauce, yuzu kosho aioli and wasabi pickled radish, this burger brings together rich, savoury flavours with a lovely little kick.

It’s a great starting point if you’re visiting for the first time.

Signature Wagyu Cheese – Our Family Favourite!

This one was a clear winner with the family!

Everything we enjoyed about the original Signature Wagyu, with the addition of cheddar cheese.

The combination of wagyu beef, melted cheese, creamy sauces and that tangy pickled radish worked beautifully together.

If you’re a cheeseburger lover, we’d definitely recommend giving this one a go!

Wagyu Menchi Katsu

Something a little different from your traditional beef burger.

Instead of a regular grilled patty, this one features panko-crumbed wagyu beef, giving it a delicious crispy coating.

Paired with miso mustard, yuzu wasabi slaw, jalapeño and cheddar, it’s packed with flavour and texture.

A great option for anyone who loves Japanese-style fried dishes.

Chicken Katsu

You really can’t go wrong with a good chicken katsu!

Made with panko-crumbed chicken thigh, miso mustard and Japanese tartare sauce, this burger is all about that golden, crunchy coating and tender chicken.

Simple, satisfying and another great choice from the menu.

Crispy Mushroom with an Added Wagyu Patty – So Good!

Now this was one combination we absolutely loved!

The Crispy Mushroom burger already comes with panko-crumbed mushroom, miso mustard, truffle mayo, pickled radish and cheddar.

But we decided to take it up a notch by adding a wagyu beef patty.

And we’re so glad we did!

The crispy mushroom, juicy beef and creamy truffle mayo made such a delicious combination. Rich, savoury and full of flavour, this was easily one of our standout picks from lunch.

Our recommendation? Add the wagyu patty to the Crispy Mushroom burger. You can thank us later!

As much as we enjoyed the burgers, the sides deserve a special mention too.

Okonomi Fries

These were seriously good!

Crispy fries topped with okonomi sauce, yuzu kosho aioli and Japanese bonito flakes.

Inspired by the flavours of Japanese okonomiyaki, these aren’t your average loaded fries.

The combination of savoury sauces, creamy aioli and delicate bonito flakes makes them a must-try.

We’d happily order these again!

Chicken Karaage

Another Japanese favourite that didn’t disappoint.

Crispy fried chicken thigh served with chilli miso mayo for dipping.

Golden, crunchy and packed with flavour, these are perfect for sharing alongside your burgers.

Fresh Apple Slaw

Sometimes it’s the simplest dishes that surprise you.

SUPA BÁGÁ’s slaw combines cabbage, carrot and apple with yuzu wasabi aioli.

We particularly loved the addition of fresh apple, which gave the slaw a lovely sweetness and crunch.

It was light, refreshing and a great way to balance out all those delicious burgers and fried sides.

Definitely worth adding to your order!

One thing that makes SUPA BÁGÁ stand out is its colourful selection of Japanese-inspired drinks and floats.

Forget your standard milkshakes; there’s everything from yuzu sodas to matcha creations.

We tried two floats during our visit.

Yuzu Ichigo Strawberry Float – Our Favourite!

This was easily our favourite drink!

The fruity Yuzu Ichigo Strawberry Fizz, topped with vanilla ice cream and sea salt cream, was such a refreshing combination.

Sweet, tangy, creamy and absolutely delicious.

It’s the kind of drink that’s both fun to photograph and even better to enjoy.

If you’re visiting, we’d definitely recommend trying the Strawberry Float!

Matcha Latte Float

For the matcha lovers, this one’s for you.

A Japanese-inspired twist on a classic float, combining matcha latte with vanilla ice cream and sea salt cream.

Creamy, earthy and a little indulgent, it’s a great alternative if you prefer something less fruity.

Is SUPA BÁGÁ Worth Visiting?

We think so!

What we enjoyed most about SUPA BÁGÁ was that it wasn’t simply another burger shop.

There’s a real Japanese influence throughout the menu, from the yuzu and miso-based sauces to the crispy katsu burgers, bonito-topped fries and creative floats.

The bright orange fit-out gives the venue a fun, contemporary feel, while the casual menu makes it an easy lunch stop when exploring Southbank or the city with the kids.

We also love seeing independent Melbourne hospitality businesses bringing fresh ideas to the local food scene.

It’s still early days for SUPA BÁGÁ, but there’s plenty of potential here.
