Remember when going to Pizza Hut was an actual night out?
The endless pizzas, heading back to the buffet for “just one more slice”, loading your plate with pasta and garlic bread, and of course finishing with a soft serve absolutely covered in sprinkles?
Well, believe it or not, you can still experience it.
Tucked away in Bakery Hill, Ballarat, you’ll find Victoria’s last remaining Pizza Hut dine-in restaurant with its classic all-you-can-eat buffet – and visiting with the kids felt like stepping straight back into our childhood.
For those of us who grew up with Pizza Hut birthday parties and family dinners in the ’80s and ’90s, this place is seriously nostalgic. Pizza Hut’s dine-in restaurants were once found all over Australia, but as takeaway and delivery became the focus, the traditional restaurants slowly disappeared. Today, Ballarat is the last of its kind in Victoria.
The old-school Pizza Hut experience is still alive
Walking inside, there’s something wonderfully familiar about it.
This isn’t a flashy new restaurant trying to recreate the ’90s – it’s the real thing. There are buffet stations, big Pizza Hut signs, booths and tables filled with families and trays of pizza constantly making their way out from the kitchen.
We visited with the kids and genuinely had such a fun experience.
Part of the appeal is giving the kids the freedom to grab a plate and choose what they want, then go back and try something different. And when you’re feeding a family, having everyone able to choose their own favourites definitely makes dinner easier.
There was a great selection during our visit, with different pizzas continually coming out along with hot chips, pasta and other sides.
And it isn’t all beige food either! There’s a separate salad bar with plenty to choose from, including fresh salads, coleslaw, pasta salads, beetroot and other sides.
Then comes the dessert bar…
This might have been the kids’ favourite part – although we’re not pretending the adults didn’t enjoy it too!
You can make your own soft serve creation and load it up with all the fun extras. During our visit there were toppings including rainbow sprinkles, chocolate chips, marshmallows and brownie pieces, so naturally the kids took the “all you can eat” part very seriously.
There’s something about building an enormous soft serve sundae at Pizza Hut that instantly transports you back a few decades.
Watching our own kids doing exactly what we did when we were younger was probably our favourite part of the visit.
Is Pizza Hut Ballarat worth the drive from Melbourne?
For us, yes – particularly if you grew up with the old Pizza Hut restaurants.
Ballarat is around 90 minutes from Melbourne, making it an easy family day trip or a fun addition to a weekend away.
We thought the buffet was great value for families, especially with the amount of choice and the fact that everyone can go back for more.
Prices vary depending on the session and day, so we recommend checking the current buffet pricing directly with the restaurant before travelling rather than relying on older online prices.
But this experience is about more than simply seeing how much pizza you can eat.
It’s the nostalgia.
It’s taking your kids somewhere you remember going when you were their age. It’s the buffet, the red plates, the Pizza Hut signs and that excitement of deciding what you’re going to pile onto your plate next.
And judging by how busy it can get, plenty of other families are feeling nostalgic too.
A little piece of Aussie dining nostalgia
There aren’t many places where parents can genuinely say to their kids, “This is what we used to do when we were your age.”
Pizza Hut Ballarat is one of them.
Australia once had Pizza Hut dine-in restaurants everywhere, but only a small number of traditional locations remain around the country. A 2025 national survey identified eight remaining dine-in restaurants, while Ballarat continues to stand alone as Victoria’s remaining location.
We loved being able to introduce the kids to a little piece of our childhood – and thankfully, the endless pizza and DIY ice cream still has exactly the same appeal to the next generation.

Melbourne with Kidz tip: If nostalgia is the reason you’re visiting, take the kids and make an experience of it rather than just stopping in for pizza. Seeing them head up to the buffet, choose their own slices and create ridiculous soft serves is half the fun.
