Looking for something a little different to do with the kids in Melbourne? The Westgate Punt is a fun and affordable way to cross the Yarra River between Spotswood and Port Melbourne – and you’ll travel right underneath the West Gate Bridge!
The short ferry crossing takes around 3–5 minutes and is open to pedestrians, cyclists and families. You can also bring prams, wheelchairs, bikes and dogs on leads onboard.

The Westgate Punt is very budget-friendly:
- Weekdays: $3 per crossing
- Weekends: $5 per crossing
- Payment: EFTPOS only – Visa, Mastercard, debit cards and Amex accepted

Where does the Westgate Punt leave from?
On the western side, the punt departs from Spotswood Jetty on Douglas Parade, near Craig Street. It’s also within walking distance of Spotswood Station.
On the Port Melbourne side, it departs from Westgate Landing on Lorimer Street, near Sardine Street.
Weekend and public holiday service
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the Westgate Punt operates on demand from 9am–5pm.
Simply turn up and the punt will take you across. You may need to wait a few minutes if it is completing another crossing.
Weekday services operate to a timetable, so it’s worth checking the latest departure times before you go.
Make a day of it
Bring the bikes and continue along the cycling paths into Melbourne, or head into Spotswood and combine your trip with a visit to Scienceworks or lunch nearby.
It’s a simple little Melbourne adventure, but travelling underneath the West Gate Bridge gives you a completely different view of one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
Good to know: The Westgate Punt does not operate on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or Good Friday.
