HMAS Castlemaine Museum: Explore a Real Warship in Williamstown

Looking for an affordable family outing with a difference? Head to Gem Pier in Williamstown, where you can step aboard HMAS Castlemaine and explore a historic naval ship turned floating museum.

This restored World War II corvette gives families a glimpse into life at sea, with original equipment and maritime displays. Preserved and operated by volunteers, it’s a fascinating piece of Australian history right on Melbourne’s waterfront.

What can kids do on board?

There’s plenty for curious kids to discover as they explore the ship’s compartments. Visitors can ring bells, use voicepipes to send messages between spaces and see the original engines turning over. Guided tours are usually available, too. Allow around an hour to look around.

Make a day of Williamstown

Combine your visit with a waterfront stroll, a picnic or something to eat nearby. With cafés, parks and playgrounds close to Gem Pier, it’s an easy addition to a family day exploring Williamstown.

Things to know before visiting

Wear sturdy shoes suitable for climbing steel ladders. Prams can be left on deck, as the passages and openings are difficult to navigate with them.
