Tucked away in Carlton North, MALIN is the kind of Melbourne restaurant you could easily walk past without realising what’s waiting behind the door – and that’s part of its charm.

With MALIN celebrating its second birthday next month, we thought it was the perfect time to share this little hidden gem after recently heading in for a proper date night. We left the kids at home, and settled in for an evening of beautiful food, great service and a few uninterrupted hours together.

From the moment we stepped inside, MALIN felt intimate and welcoming. It’s refined without being stuffy, with soft lighting, crisp tablecloths, artwork and a cosy dining room that feels more like a little neighbourhood restaurant you’d stumble across somewhere in Europe.

Set inside an 1880s corner building in Rathdowne Village, every detail feels considered, but there’s still a warmth to the space that makes you feel at home.

It’s exactly the sort of place we love for date night – special enough to feel like an occasion, but relaxed enough that you can settle in, enjoy the food and actually have a conversation.
MALIN is headed by French chef Clément Pilatre, with the menu centred around modern French techniques, seasonal produce and plenty of creativity.

During our visit, the winter Chef’s Tasting Menu was available as either a four-course menu for $125 per person or a six-course experience for $175 per person, beginning with bread and salted butter before moving through a series of beautifully presented dishes.

The winter menu draws plenty of inspiration from the ocean, and one of the things we enjoyed most was that you never quite knew what was coming next.

We started with combinations including a nori cone with tarama, candied lemon and black sesame, a Jerusalem artichoke tartlet with salmon roe, and a beautifully flame-torched scallop paired with Jurançon green grape and verjuice vinaigrette.

Another course brought together beetroot, Sydney rock oyster, gingerbread crumble and vin chaud sauce – exactly the sort of combination you probably wouldn’t think to put together yourself, but that’s where MALIN’s creativity really comes through.

Another standout was Le Dimanche de Grandmère – chou farci served with a shellfish emulsion, chicken jus, celeriac and tonka parée. Beautifully presented and packed with layered flavours, it was a memorable part of the menu.

Dessert continued on that same path, finishing the meal with Swiss meringue, Madagascan vanilla cream, calamansi sorbet and bergamot, followed by petite sweets.

It’s adventurous food, but importantly, it doesn’t feel like it’s trying to be different simply for the sake of it.

There’s a lot of technique behind each plate, while still allowing the ingredients to do the talking.
And yes… we added the extras
Because apparently a tasting menu wasn’t quite enough for us, we also added the Wagyu, mash and salad du jour — and we were very glad we did.

The Wagyu was a standout, particularly alongside the smooth, creamy mash.

Our salad du jour was mizuna topped with Parmigiano Reggiano, and it ended up being the perfect addition. The freshness and slightly peppery flavour of the mizuna cut through the richness of the Wagyu and mash beautifully, while the Parmigiano tied everything together.

Those three extras worked so well as a combination that we’d happily order them again.

By the end of the night we were definitely full, but if you’re heading in hungry or want to make your tasting menu experience even more generous, they’re well worth adding.

The people behind the experience
One thing that stood out to us at MALIN was how personal the experience felt.

Millie, MALIN’s Head of Beverage, looked after us front of house. Rather than service feeling overly formal, there was a genuine warmth to the evening that suited the intimate dining room perfectly.

Behind the food was Judith, affectionately known as Juju, who has become an important part of the MALIN kitchen team.

Originally from La Rochelle on the west coast of France, Judith has been in Melbourne for around four years after previously living in New Zealand. She has been part of the MALIN team for more than a year and, from what we learnt about her, she’s someone who genuinely enjoys the connection between the kitchen, floor and guests.

Her role goes beyond simply preparing dishes – she also runs food to tables, chats with diners during service, and has become an integral part of the team.

That connection between the kitchen and dining room is something you can actually feel when you eat here. MALIN may have the accolades of a fine-dining restaurant, but the people behind it keep the experience warm, genuine and approachable.
For such an intimate neighbourhood restaurant, MALIN has already built an impressive reputation.
The restaurant was awarded One Hat in The Age Good Food Guide 2026, an achievement proudly displayed inside the restaurant.

MALIN and Chef Clément Pilatre have also attracted international attention, including recognition from the Los Angeles Times for the restaurant’s creative approach to French dining.
But what we liked most is that despite those accolades, MALIN still feels wonderfully understated.

There’s no pretentious atmosphere or feeling that you need to know everything about fine dining before walking through the door. The food may be technically impressive and beautifully presented, but the overall experience remains relaxed and personal.
MALIN is one of those restaurants that reminds you just how many incredible dining experiences are hiding beyond Melbourne’s CBD.
It’s cosy, romantic and beautifully understated, making it a great choice for date night, an anniversary, birthday or simply one of those nights when you feel like doing something a little more special.

The tasting-menu format encourages you to slow down and enjoy the evening rather than rushing through dinner, and every course gives you something different to talk about.
Beautiful food, thoughtful presentation, a warm intimate dining room and a team who genuinely add to the experience.
If your idea of a great date night is discovering somewhere a little different rather than booking the same places everyone already knows, MALIN deserves a spot on your list.
