Lygon Street is getting a fresh injection of Italian comfort food this weekend, with the opening of Sangaweech on Saturday 28 February – and the team is celebrating in a big way by giving away 500 free sangaweeches to early customers.

The new sandwich shop comes from the creators behind Sooshi Mango, who have translated their trademark love of Italian family culture into a casual, walk-in food experience in the heart of Lygon Street.

Ahead of the public opening, we were invited to a VIP preview night on Thursday 26 February, and the excitement in the room was unmistakable. This is a venue built on nostalgia, humour and – most importantly – quality food done properly.
A Menu Built Around Quality (and Nonna-Approved Portions)
At the core of Sangaweech is its sandwich menu, with options available in “Mumma size” or “Nonna size” for those wanting to level up. The focus is clearly on fresh bread and top-tier ingredients, with classic Italian flavours running throughout.

Standout sandwiches include The Wooden Spoon, featuring a golden chicken cotoletta with stracciatella, peppers, pickled tomato and basil – a comforting, well-balanced sanga that was easily our favourite on the night. Other options range from mortadella-heavy classics to porchetta, capocollo and meatball-based sangas, alongside a vegetarian option for those skipping meat.

Beyond the sandwiches, Sangaweech also delivers when it comes to sides and sweets – particularly for families. The home chopped chips are freshly cut and perfectly crisp, while Nonna’s Nuggets are a clear step above standard nuggets – more like mini, freshly crumbed schnitzels, golden on the outside and tender inside. My daughter demolished both without hesitation.

For something sweet, the menu includes a Nutella sanga, tiramisu slices and Italian-style sundaes, alongside shakes and iced coffees that make it just as appealing for an afternoon stop as a late-night feed.
A Welcome Addition to Carlton
Sangaweech keeps things relaxed and accessible – no bookings, no fuss, just good food served with warmth. It’s designed to work for everyone, from families and students to locals chasing a late-night bite after dinner.
The opening also feels like a positive moment for Lygon Street, adding a modern but respectful take on Italian street food that complements the area’s history rather than competing with it.
