In a city where eating out keeps getting more expensive, The Heart of Carlton feels like a quiet act of kindness.
This much-loved Carlton café does something almost unheard of in today’s world: everything on the menu is just $4. From baguettes and pasta to curries, smoothies and coffee – all freshly made, all the same price. And somehow, it works.
We ordered a mix to try as much as possible – and every single dish delivered.
The kids happily demolished their baguette and bolognese, washing it down with freshly squeezed orange juice. We went for the pesto pasta, curried rice and an iced latte – all flavourful, comforting and clearly cooked with care.
For dessert, kids had hot chocolates, and they have in-house made brownies, cookies , cakes and slices for just $2, which felt like a throwback to another era.
Simple food, generous portions, no fuss – just proper, home-cooked meals at prices that make you do a double take.
The Heart of Carlton is run by husband-and-wife team Michael and Nadeen Kelly, who have lived in Carlton for over 16 years. Michael hand-builds the furniture you sit on, while Nadeen cooks the food onsite every day. Everything about the space feels personal.
While we were there, all we could see were regulars from every walk of life – chatting at tables, reading books, playing the piano or picking up an instrument. People lingered. No one was rushed. It felt safe. It felt welcoming. It felt like a home.
It’s not just about eating here – it’s about slowing down. Everyone is welcome, conversations happen naturally, and the café genuinely feels like an extension of the community rather than just a place to grab food.
Why only $4? The question comes up a lot – and the answer is simple. Michael and Nadeen believe affordable food keeps community spaces alive. In a cost-of-living crisis, they’ve chosen to go the other way, proving that kindness, creativity and connection still have a place in Melbourne.
