If you’re looking for something a little different to wrap up the year, Wharf on Cloud 9 at The Wharf Hotel is a standout summer experience that families will genuinely enjoy.
Floating (without leaving the ground ) right on the Yarra, these colourful hot air balloon dining pods are Australia’s first of their kind, and they instantly turn a simple meal into a fun occasion. We loved it – relaxed, playful and surprisingly spacious – and it felt like the perfect spot for end-of-year family catch-ups, especially on a Sunday.

Each pod offers a private, cosy space overlooking the river, making it ideal for birthdays, family lunches, casual celebrations or even a low-key date.
You can order from The Wharf Hotel’s à la carte menu, with optional grazing boards (including vegetarian options), and enjoy the views while the kids feel like they’re on a little adventure.
Family Sundays = big win 🙌
Sundays are where this experience really shines for families. From 12pm–3pm, there are free kids’ activities including garden games and colouring, plus a party bag for each child. It’s relaxed, welcoming and easy – exactly what you want for a family outing.
Sessions run for 90 minutes, with pods accommodating up to six people, making it perfect for parents, grandparents and kids all together.
Pair it with a playground visit
Another reason we loved this spot? It’s only a 3-minute walk to Seafarers Rest Park, Melbourne’s newest riverside playground.
Start with a play by the Yarra, then stroll straight to lunch or dinner – no car juggling needed.
