The Ultimate Family Day Out for Art, VR, Learning & Hands-On Creativity
If you’re looking for a Melbourne activity that blends education, art, creativity, science, immersive play and loads of hands-on fun, Metartworld in Port Melbourne is easily one of the most impressive indoor experiences to take the kids to.

This huge creative complex is home to Australia’s largest mirror-maze exhibition, a massive VR theme park and a Guinness World Record–winning scrap metal art gallery featuring more than 600 sculptures made entirely from recycled metal. It’s a full day out where kids can explore, learn, create and play – and adults will genuinely love it too.
STARRY SKY EXHIBITION – IMMERSIVE ROOMS

The Starry Sky Exhibition is a walk-through adventure of glowing spaces, colourful mazes and dreamy atmospheres, with each room offering something completely different.

One of the newest additions is the Master Oil Painting Art Room, a mirrored wonderland filled with illuminated cubes showing artworks from famous painters like Van Gogh, Monet, Da Vinci and Munch. It feels like stepping inside a living gallery.

The Candy Maze is bright, colourful and whimsical, a favourite with kids who love getting lost in a kaleidoscope of colour. The Enchanted Forest offers a softer, more calming experience – shifting lights, floating fabrics and quiet ambience make it feel like a magical forest of light and shadow.

The Intergalactic Journey sends you through a cosmic world of planets, stars and 3D-style visuals, while the Reach for the Stars room surrounds you with diamond-like lights that mimic stars suspended in the air, creating a dreamy, infinite landscape.

For families looking for something a little more thrilling, the Abyss Maze features a glass floor illusion that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a deep pit — kids scream and laugh their way through it.

The Jellyfish Maze surrounds you with glowing, floating jellyfish, creating a peaceful underwater-inspired world. And the 360° Tunnel is a fully immersive projection tunnel that takes you through oceans, galaxies, forests and more in one giant sensory sweep.
SCRAP METAL ART GALLERY – GUINNESS WORLD RECORD HOLDER

Beyond the immersive rooms lies one of the most jaw-dropping parts of Metartworld: the Guinness World Record–winning scrap metal art gallery.

With more than 600 sculptures made entirely from recycled metal, this gallery is a fascinating way for kids to see how everyday materials can be transformed into art.

The sculptures include giant robots, dragons, dinosaurs, animals, Transformers, motorcycles and movie characters, all pieced together from recycled gears, pipes, engines, screws and industrial components.

It’s visually incredible and a fantastic learning opportunity about sustainability and engineering.
EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE – METALS, RECYCLING & STEAM LEARNING
Metartworld also includes detailed educational displays that explain where metals come from, how they are extracted and why metal recycling matters. Kids can learn that metals like copper, iron, gold, zinc and silver are mined from the Earth’s crust and extracted through smelting, and that when two or more metals are combined, they form an alloy.

The exhibition also explains why metal recycling is so important for our environment – reducing landfill waste, protecting soil and water, saving energy and supporting the economy.

There are also clear descriptions of the different types of recyclable metals. Ferrous metals contain iron and are magnetic, such as steel and cast iron, while non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminium, brass, zinc and nickel do not contain iron and are generally more valuable. The metal recycling process is broken down into simple steps that kids can easily understand, from collection and separation to shredding, melting, purification and shaping. It’s an ideal STEAM-focused learning environment, especially for school groups or curious kids.
METART STUDIO – 60+ ART WORKSHOPS
Alongside the exhibitions is Metart Studio, which offers more than 60 hands-on art workshops for kids and adults.

Children can make Turkish mosaic lamps, paint plaster figures, decorate whipped-cream art creations, pour resin bears, build miniature theatre boxes, create jewellery, decorate frames and shells, or try embroidery and other crafts. Workshops run daily and are perfect for school holidays, birthday parties or a creative family day out.
VR THEME PARK, 9D CINEMA & FREE E-SPORTS ROOMS

Metartworld also features a massive VR zone with more than 100 virtual reality games to choose from. Kids can try VR roller coasters, flying simulators, racing games, shooting games, adventure games and multiplayer experiences and they have just added Paragliding VR and a F1 Racing Simulator.

The VR games operate using a game card system, with a small deposit and per-game pricing, and families can save by purchasing multiple games at once.

The 9D Flying Cinema is included with your entry ticket and is a huge hit – a short, multi-sensory ride with motion seats, wind, mist and surround effects that make you feel like you’re inside the film. There are also four free e-sports game rooms where families can challenge each other in floor tile games, laser dodging, target throwing and interactive wall-press challenges.

These are included in every admission ticket and add so much extra value to the experience.
BIRTHDAY PARTIES & GROUP EXPERIENCES
Metartworld is also a fantastic venue for birthday parties. Families can choose between a standard party package that includes exhibition entry, a private party room, gifts and BYO food options; an art workshop party that includes a creative activity for each guest; or a VR party that gives kids unlimited virtual reality access. Schools and corporate groups can also organise tailored visits, with discounts available for larger bookings.
