Oxi Tea Room’s New High Tea & A La Carte Menu

If you’ve ever wished you could travel through time, Oxi Tea Room in Carlton has created the next best thing – and you can taste it. Their brand-new theme, “Palate Through Time: Before & Beyond”, is a multi-sensory food journey that blends history, storytelling, and incredible flavours into one unforgettable high tea and a la carte dining experience.


Palate Through Time: Before (Afternoon Tea)

The 10-course high tea takes you across centuries, with each dish inspired by a different era. From the herb flatbreads of Ancient Egypt and barley with cured fish from Ancient Rome, to the spice-rich dishes of the Islamic Golden Age and decadent sweets of the Belle Époque, each course is a lesson in culture, taste, and history.


Highlights include:

Ancient Egypt (2500 BC): Herb flatbread, salad and confit mushrooms.

Elizabethan Era (1300–1500): Pie tart with nutmeg & curry-spiced chicken (or soy chunks for vegetarians).

Industrial Revolution (1800s): Sponge cake with mixed berry jam & vanilla custard cream.

Modern Nordic (2000s): Foie gras & brûlée with burnt butter bread.

Kids will especially love the guessing game of flavours – trying each dish, imagining what it might be, then checking the menu to see if they were right. It turns food into a playful adventure!

Palate Through Time: Beyond (A La Carte)

After exploring the past, step into the future with the a la carte “Beyond” menu, which imagines a climate-conscious world of food shaped by sustainability, fermentation, and foraging.

Standout dishes include:

The Loaf Factory – House-made loaf with smoked orange & caramel miso butter.

The Listening People – Soy milk tofu with yuzu mandarin, matcha and black bean.

The City in the Sky – Thai milk tea with lapsang souchong, mochi, and sunflower seed.

Lost in the Future – A spectacular mix of black sesame, smoked duck, mushroom miso, butterfly pea flower and even green ant.

It’s food designed to make you think about what’s possible tomorrow, while still being absolutely delicious today.


An Immersive Experience

This isn’t just dining – it’s a full sensory journey. With the help of an app, you’ll see, smell and taste the different eras as you move through the menu. The attention to detail is remarkable, and the whole experience is designed to spark curiosity and conversation at the table.

Even kids will be entertained – they can join in on flavour-guessing games, discover new ingredients, and experience food in a way that feels like storytelling.
