If you’re looking for a unique and affordable outing that both kids and adults will enjoy, we highly recommend a visit to the Melbourne Tram Museum in Hawthorn. We recently spent a few hours exploring this beautifully preserved space, and it’s an absolute treat for tram enthusiasts and curious little minds alike.

Housed inside the heritage-listed Hawthorn Tram Depot, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Melbourne’s iconic tramway history, dating all the way back to 1885. It’s home to 20 fully-restored trams, including some rare gems like the open-sided 1906 “toast-rack” V-class tram and prototypes of the famous Z-class. Walking through the depot feels like stepping into a time capsule – you can hop aboard the trams, admire their beautifully restored interiors, and learn all about how Melbourne’s tram system has evolved.

But what really makes this place special is the dedicated team of volunteers who run the museum. Many of them actually worked on Melbourne’s trams in years past, and they’re full of stories and facts that bring the exhibits to life. They’re more than happy to answer questions, share memories, or simply chat with curious kids (and grown-ups!).
