Explore the Wonders of Ancient Egypt
Coinciding with the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® exhibition Pharaoh, this interactive exhibition is a must-visit. Children and their families will be enthralled by displays of ancient Egyptian objects from the NGV’s Collection. The exhibit space itself is a marvel, featuring gleaming gold walls and floor-to-ceiling hieroglyphs that set the stage for an immersive experience.
The exhibition is housed in the NGV Children’s Gallery and offers a variety of engaging activities:
Crack Hieroglyphs: Budding Egyptologists will love learning about the ancient Egyptian writing script, hieroglyphs. Kids can receive an activity sheet and turn their names into hieroglyphs using crayons and the frottage art technique. Younger children can also create pictures inspired by the animals and plants along the Nile River.
Build a Pyramid: Discover why the ancient Egyptians chose the pyramid shape for their royal tombs. Kids aged 2 and up can build their versions of these timeless structures using specially made boxes. It’s a hands-on activity that teaches about the ingenuity and engineering of ancient times.
Take the Quiz: Who were the ancient Egyptians? What were their beliefs and daily lives like? Set in a stunning room of gold, this animated multimedia quiz invites kids to travel back in time and learn through play. Guided by a lively papyrus scroll and a local cat, children will collect hieroglyphs and be rewarded at the end.
Ancient Egypt for Kids is not just an exhibition; it’s a journey of learning, play, and discovery. It offers a unique opportunity for children to dive into history and culture in a fun and interactive way. The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 5pm until 6th October, and best of all, it’s free!
