Shelanous: A Night to Remember

Shelanous, Melbourne’s latest culinary gem, is nestled amidst the city’s vibrant dining scene in Port Melbourne. It promises an extraordinary experience, and it certainly did not disappoint.

Originally a pop-up, Shelanous has evolved into a multi-sensory journey, capturing the essence of the city’s seasons in every dish. The name “Shelanous” combines “she” and “nous,” which means “our” or “us” in Hebrew and French, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of sharing and togetherness that defines this place.

From the moment we stepped through the doors, it felt like being in a vintage cinema lobby, eagerly awaiting the start of a movie. We were greeted with freshly made popcorn, complete with a hidden surprise: a cocktail made with Moscato and sweet peach syrup, preparing us for the immersive and theatrical 5 senses + 4 seasons degustation food experience to come.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Shelanous is how it brings Melbourne’s notorious “four seasons in one day” to life in a dining experience. In just three hours, with the help of blindfolds and noise-cancelling headsets, we were transported through Melbourne’s seasons, with changes in lighting, music, and decorations that made it feel like we stopped into a theatrical performance. It was an experience too good not to share!

Our evening began with a series of appetisers that were as visually stunning as they were delicious. Each course was meticulously paired with beverages that enhanced the flavours, creating a symphony for the senses. Each dish was a work of art, telling a story and offering a taste of Melbourne’s diverse seasonal produce. The highlight for me was the seared scallops (mushroom) with a delicate citrus glaze, while my partner couldn’t get enough of the creamy mushroom truffle tortellini with blue cheese cream.

What truly sets Shelanous apart is the genius of Chef Rony Parienty. His global culinary journey through France, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, and Spain shines through in every dish. Additionally, he has worked at one of Melbourne’s iconic restaurants, Vue de Monde, and was the head chef at No35 Sofitel. His ability to blend these influences into a cohesive, delightful experience is nothing short of magical. Our favourite part of the evening was hearing Chef Rony’s story and journey. It added a personal touch that made the experience even more special.

The evening was also about more than just food. The communal aspect of the dining experience at Shelanous led us to meet new people, and by the end of the night, we felt like we were leaving with new friends. The excitement of not knowing what would come next on the menu added a sense of adventure that kept us eagerly anticipating each course.

The experience included a 10-course degustation menu matched with drinks, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available. The night ended on a high note with the famous Chef Rony Parienty’s dessert show, a spectacular finale that was almost too beautiful to eat.

As the night drew to a close, we couldn’t help but reflect on the entire experience. Shelanous is not just a restaurant; it’s a destination. Whether you’re planning a romantic date night or looking for a unique dining experience with friends, Shelanous offers an evening that lingers in your memory long after the last bite.

Our visit to Shelanous was a gastronomic adventure, a blend of visual and culinary artistry that we can’t wait to experience again. If you’re in Melbourne and seeking the extraordinary in your dining experiences, add Shelanous to your Melbourne food bucket list.
