Opening night of Electric Kingdom at Birrarung Marr!
The Electric Kingdom is a new, free after-dark lights festival that’s made possible through the Melbourne City Revitalisation Fund, a fantastic initiative by the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne. It’s all about bringing the city to life after dark, and let me tell you, it succeeds in the most enchanting way.

The heart of Electric Kingdom is a menagerie of giant illuminated animals. These creatures are colossal, with some reaching towering heights of up to 27 meters. As we wandered through the festival, we found ourselves face to face with luminous pandas, graceful giraffes, sinuous snakes, and enigmatic ocean dwellers. What sets this apart is the way each artwork tells a story through light, movement, and sound. It’s like stepping into a magical realm.

Beyond the awe-inspiring animal installations, Electric Kingdom offers so much more. Live performances meander through the crowd, adding a sense of wonder and excitement to the night. The ambient soundscapes create an ethereal atmosphere, and the additional light installations scattered throughout the area are nothing short of breathtaking.

This festival runs from Thursday to Sunday, 6 pm to 10 pm, between September 7 and September 17 at Birrarung Marr. And here’s the kicker – it’s entirely free! Though I’d recommend registering on their website for a smoother experience.

Despite the rain on opening night, Electric Kingdom illuminated our evening with its enchanting world of light and imagination. It’s a family-friendly adventure that I highly recommend. Rain or shine, it’s a luminous experience you won’t want to miss.
