Discover Unique Coffee Adventures in Bali

Our journey to the stunning rice fields in Bali took an unexpected and intriguing detour – a visit to a local coffee plantation. As we arrived, our excitement was palpable, especially for the chance to taste the world-renowned Luwak coffee. But there was a twist: Luwak coffee is made from beans that have been, well, “processed” by a cat! Now, before you cringe, hear us out; it’s not as revolting as it might seem.

Here’s the curious process: First, civet cats feast on coffee cherries. These cherries undergo a fascinating journey through the cats’ digestive tracts, fermenting along the way. Eventually, they are excreted. After collection, the beans are thoroughly cleaned, lightly roasted, and brewed. Surprisingly, these beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness, often celebrated as the world’s most expensive coffee.

After a delightful garden walk, our guide treated us to a complimentary tea and coffee tasting session. It was a fantastic experience, trying different flavors and discovering the medicinal benefits of various teas. Intrigued by the unusual coffee process, we decided to give the “poop coffee,” as the kids affectionately called it, a try. For just $5 a cup, we sampled this unique brew, and to our surprise, it was smooth and not as strong or bitter as we anticipated.

Best of all, entry to the plantation is free, and it includes a guided tour of the entire coffee-making process, along with delightful tea and coffee samples. If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t miss the chance to savor Luwak coffee and even purchase some to take home as a truly unforgettable Bali souvenir.
